On the H I column density – radio source size anticorrelation in compact radio sources

چکیده
Existing studies of the atomic hydrogen gas content in distant galaxies, through the absorption of the 21-cm line, often infer that the total column density, NHI, is anticorrelated with the linear extent of the background radio source, dem. We investigate this interpretation, by dissecting the various parameters from which NH I is derived, and find that the relationship is driven primarily by the observed optical depth, τ obs, which, for a given absorber size, is anticorrelated with dem. Therefore, the inferred NH I−dem anticorrelation is merely the consequence of geometry, in conjunction with the assumption of a common spin temperature/covering factor ratio for each member of the sample, an assumption for which there is scant observational justification. While geometry can explain the observed correlation, many radio sources comprise two radio lobes and so we model the projected area of a two-component emitter intercepted by a foreground absorber. From this, the observed τobs−dem relationship is best reproduced through models which approximate either of the two Fanaroff & Riley classifications, although the observed scatter in the sample cannot be duplicated using a single deprojected radio source size. Furthermore, the trend is best reproduced using an absorber of diameter ∼100−1000 pc, which is also the range of values of dem at which the 21-cm detection rate peaks. This may indicate that this is the characteristic linear size of the absorbing gas structure.

Evidence for a Circumnuclear Disk in 1946 + 708
A number of extragalactic radio sources which exhibit symmetric jets on parsec scales have now been found to have neutral hydrogen absorption at or near the systemic velocities of their host galaxies. Understanding the spatial distribution and kinematics of the H i detected toward the central parsecs of these sources provides an important test of unified schemes for AGN. We present results of G...
متن کاملH i Absorption in High - Frequency Peaker Galaxies
WSRT observations have been used to investigate the presence of neutral hydrogen in extremely young radio galaxies. These objects were selected from a sample of High-Frequency Peakers (HFPs). We detect 2 of the 6 observed galaxies confirming previous detection of H i in these objects. In the case of OQ 208-for which discrepant results were available-we confirm the presence of a broad (∼ 1800 km...
متن کاملHigh Frequency Peakers
There is quite a clear anticorrelation between the intrinsic peak frequency and the overall radio source size in Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GHz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources as shown by O’Dea (1998). This feature is interpreted in terms of synchrotron self-absorption (although free-free absorption may play a role as well) of the radiation emitted by a small radio source which is gro...
متن کاملUnification scheme and the distribution of neutral gas in compact radio sources
We examine the consistency of Hi properties with the unification scheme for radio galaxies and quasars, and any correlation with the symmetry parameters for a sample of CSS and GPS sources. In our sample, 15 out of 23 galaxies exhibit 21-cm absorption as against 1 out of 9 quasars, which is broadly consistent with the unification scheme. Also there is a tendency for the detection rate as well a...
متن کاملProbing radio source environments via Hi and OH absorption
We present the results of Hi and OH absorption measurements towards a sample of radio sources using the Arecibo 305-m telescope and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). In total, 27 radio sources were searched for associated 21-cm Hi absorption. One totally new Hi absorption system was detected against the radio galaxy 3C258, while five previously known Hi absorption systems, and one gal...
